TUCSON, Ariz., Oct. 1, 2019 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ -- Today, the nonprofit Innovate+Educate (I+E) and Pima Community College (Pima) announced the release of SHIFT HAPPENS @ Pima Community College. This report follows on the publication of SHIFT HAPPENS II, released by Innovate+Educate in February 2019 that paper received recognition globally.
Pima and I+E formed a collaboration in April 2019 following the release to describe where the "rubber meets the road" in ensuring equity and access for students and learners in the rapidly changing working and learning environment. "The goal of this collaboration was not to release a paper but to inspire ever more colleges to modify their systems and processes to serve working learners. Right now, 54-71% of all students in the U.S. who are dropping out of college, are doing so primarily to keep their jobs. The structural incompatibility between school and work runs so deep in the U.S. that merely accommodating working learners requires enormous institutional change. What was so inspiring about working with Pima is they took their own hugely complex transformation and, for the benefit of the community, broke it down into small, actionable pieces that almost anyone could follow," stated co-author Dr. Merrilea Mayo.
"This SHIFT HAPPENS report touches on several elements of Pima's transformation. We hope that this will support others to take on bold new practices and initiatives to ensure an equitable future for working and learning,", stated Dr. Lee Lambert, Chancellor, Pima Community College. "Pima Community College will continue to identify opportunities that will ensure we stay focused on the future, always putting the learner at the center."
Highlights from Pima Community College's shift include:
- Mission/Strategic Planning on how Pima worked to drive mission focused strategies across their leadership team;
- Real Time Data ensuring the importance of the data;
- Leadership Structure including one point of contact for all industry partners;
- Future of Work Course Development including "just-in-time" certifications in energy technology, Autonomous Vehicle, and Operation Specialist and Small Business Leadership.
Innovate+Educate will also share "SHIFT Happens@Pima" with all attendees at the annual Close It Summit to be held in Santa Fe October 15-16, produced annually by Innovate+Educate. "The acceleration that we see at this year's Summit is like none other. Top-level C-suite leaders are coming from across the globe to discuss the shifts happening in the future of working and learning. We wanted to ensure that it is not just a discussion, but that this paper provides real possibilities and strategies for implementing the shift," said Jamai Blivin. "We applaud Pima Community College for leading this work."
