Over half of students surveyed say they have participated in gambling while in college, whether through lottery tickets, sports betting apps, fantasy sports and more
SEATTLE, Aug. 7, 2023 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ -- Intelligent.com, a trusted resource for online degree rankings and higher education planning, has published a recent survey report, a follow-up to a 2022 Intelligent.com study, that examines the gambling habits of college students. The information also shares insight into where and how students gamble. Overall, researchers analyzed responses from 702 current full-time or part-time undergraduate college students in the United States.
Based on the report, a sizable portion of undergraduate students have gambled while in college. Fifty-four percent of students say they have participated in some form of gambling while in college, 1 in 3 students have participated in online gambling, and 1 in 5 have used sports betting applications. The most popular gambling activities that students engaged with, listed from most to least popular, are lottery tickets, sports betting apps, fantasy sports, in-person casinos, and online casinos.
Among online gamblers, 5 percent say they started gambling in middle school, 36 percent say they started in high school, and 59 percent say they started in college. One in 5 online gamblers admit to using student loans and/or financial aid to gamble. In fact, 26 percent of online gamblers say they 'definitely' or 'probably' have a gambling addiction. Of this group, over a third say they have reached out for help with their addiction.
It is common for college athletic departments to have partnerships with sports betting companies, where these companies have a right to advertise their services to students via promo codes. The report shows that 20 percent of students surveyed say their school has such a partnership in place. Additionally, 2 in 3 students say they know of at least one student who participates in sports betting, and 24 percent say they know of six or more students.
This online poll was commissioned by Intelligent.com and conducted on SurveyMonkey Audience starting July 20, 2023. Respondents consist of a national sample that was randomly selected from a United States panel. Seven hundred and two full-time or part-time undergraduate college students aged 18 to 25 completed the survey.
