Younger Americans and Democrats are the most likely groups to support income-based college admissions
SEATTLE, July 3, 2023 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ -- Intelligent.com, a trusted resource for online degree rankings and higher education planning, has published a recent survey report that assesses how American adults feel about income-based college admissions. The report also shares insight into attitudes toward income-based quota systems. Overall, Intelligent.com researchers gathered and analyzed responses from 1,095 Americans aged 18 and older.
Based on survey findings, Americans are more likely to support income-based rather than race-based admissions. While 36 percent of respondents 'strongly' or 'somewhat' agree that an applicant's socioeconomic status should be considered in the college admissions process, only 23 percent 'strongly' or 'somewhat' agree that an applicant's race or ethnicity should be considered. Although only 36 percent of respondents support income-based admissions, 57 percent 'strongly' or 'somewhat' agree that it is more challenging for applicants from economically-disadvantaged backgrounds to achieve high test scores.
Among respondents who agree with income-based admissions, 68 percent 'strongly' or 'somewhat' agree that colleges should implement a quota system for economically-disadvantaged applicants. Respondents who identified as Democrats were more likely to support income-based admissions. While 44 percent of respondents who identified as Democrats 'strongly' or 'somewhat' agree with income-based admissions, only 29 percent of respondents who identified as Republicans agree. Likewise, younger Americans aged 18 to 24 are more likely to support income-based admissions than Americans aged 65 or older.
This online poll was commissioned by Intelligent.com and conducted by SurveyMonkey beginning on June 14, 2023. Respondents consist of a national sample of 1,095 Americans aged 18 and older.
