Interactive Design Firm Ideum Celebrates its 20th Year with New Milestones and Expansion Planned in 2020

Last month, Ideum celebrated its 20th anniversary. The past year was the company's most successful as it continues to expand and develop cutting-edge digital installations.

Our new designs, along with our integration of industry-leading touch components from 3M and Zytronic matched with 24/7 LG commercial monitors, have resulted in the best performing and most durable touch displays and multitouch tables in the world.

Ideum capped 20 years in business with its most successful year ever in 2019. Known internationally for its award-winning digital interactive installations, the company produces multitouch tables and touch displays and fabricates custom exhibits. The firm sold a record amount of touch table hardware to hundreds of museums, educational institutions, and Fortune 500 companies in 22 countries around the world in 2019. Along with that milestone, Ideum completed a number of new and ground-breaking custom installations for museums and corporate clients across the nation.

Ideum received a patent early in 2019 for its hardware manufacturing method. This new method is now used for most of Ideum's touch tables and touch displays. The firm also sold a record number of its largest Colossus and Pano multitouch tables, which contributed to its best year ever in hardware sales. "Our new designs, along with our integration of industry-leading touch components from 3M and Zytronic matched with 24/7 LG commercial monitors, have resulted in the best performing and most durable touch displays and multitouch tables in the world," noted Matt Gallegos, Ideum's Hardware Product Manager.

In its 20th year, Ideum collaborated with the Smithsonian National Museum of African Art in Washington, D.C. to design and develop a compelling introduction to the Museum's unique collection. This is Ideum's fifth collaboration with a Smithsonian museum: the firm has also completed projects with the Cooper Hewitt Design Museum, the National Museum of the American Indian, the National Air and Space Museum, and the National Portrait Gallery.

Closer to home, Ideum helped develop a series of interactive digital exhibits for the new Penguin Chill habitat at the Albuquerque BioPark. One of Ideum's largest exhibition installations to date, Penguin Chill had an immediate impact as visitation to the BioPark increased by 80% over the same period the year before. Additionally, the Albuquerque Journal recently reported that this exhibit has helped make the BioPark "the state's No. 1 most popular attraction."

In one of the firm's most challenging projects ever, Ideum collaborated with national design firms IDEO and Second Story and architectural firm Gensler to design and build a first-of-its-kind, 20-foot custom touch table covered in white Italian marble. The table has three integrated 86" 4K Ultra HD touch displays, and 88 motion sensors and an LED lighting array react as visitors approach. This massive touch table clad in tens of thousands of dollars of marble weighs nearly 3 tons (5,500lbs) and was developed for a Fortune 500 client.

Ideum was also involved in dozens of other creative projects in 2019. Here are just a few notable examples:

In Tune with Nature - A projection-based interactive immersive room that explores cycles in nature. The exhibit was developed in conjunction with Cayton Children's Museum in Santa Monica, California.

D-Day Interactive - A touch table-based exhibit on the history and impact of industrialist Andrew Higgins, whose landing craft was used extensively by the Allies in World War II. This exhibit was the second project Ideum designed and developed with the National World War II Museum in New Orleans.

French Quarter Tours - A mobile and touch table-based interactive exhibit exploring the unique history and architecture of the French Quarter. This project was developed with The Historic New Orleans Collection.

Western Design Room - A projection-based immersive room where visitors using a touch table design their own western wear as colorful design elements appear on the walls of the room. This project was developed with the National Cowgirl Museum and Hall of Fame in Fort Worth, Texas.

Deep Dive into the Brain - Not unlike the 1960s film Fantastic Voyage, the Deep Dive interactive allows visitors to use a custom control panel to travel inside the human brain through a massive immersive projection. This interactive was developed with design partners Intervoke and the South Florida Science Center and Aquarium.

"I am so proud of our team and thankful for our wonderful clients and partners. It is really satisfying to have our 20th year be our best and most exciting year yet. As a self-funded design firm, it hasn't always been easy, but we've kept investing in ourselves and our community and because of that, we keep finding success and continue getting better at what we do," said Jim Spadaccini, Ideum's Creative Director and Founder.

In 2020, Ideum will continue to grow, adding a new flex-space and meeting area to expand the company's facilities to 30,000 square feet. The company is also looking to add 10 new positions to keep up with the demand for its products and services. There are currently a half-dozen jobs posted on its website.
