Enhanced protocols for onboard air filtration and aircraft cleaning are in effect. Airline waives change fees and announces network updates as a result of the coronavirus outbreak.

Nothing is more important to us than the health and safety of our customers and employees

Interjet Airlines today, announced enhancements to its cleaning procedures in the interest of its customers’ and employees’ health and safety as well as change fee waivers for customers traveling on the airline prevented from traveling because of government restrictions. It also is reducing capacity on both domestic and international routes.

“Nothing is more important to us than the health and safety of our customers and employees, and we continue to monitor the news around coronavirus (COVID-19) very closely,” said William Shaw, CEO of Interjet Airlines. “We want everyone to feel confident when traveling with Interjet and as a result, have put into effect several changes to provide our customers additional flexibility in light of the concerns around coronavirus,” he added.

All Interjet aircraft are equipped with a HEPA (High-Efficiency Particulate Arrestors) filters,” said Alex Clerc, Interjet’s Executive Director of Operations. “The HEPA filtration system makes a complete air change approximately 15 - 30 times per hour or every two to four minutes, ensuring virus and bacteria-free air is flowing for our passengers and crew,” he commented. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Preventions, HEPA filters capture 99.9 percent of particles (bacteria, fungi, and larger viruses or virus clumps) 0.1-0.33 micrometers.

Clerc also stated since HEPA filters are only effective against airborne viruses and bacteria and 80 percent of germs are contracted via touch, Interjet’s team of in-house industrial hygienists now oversee Interjet aircraft cleaning procedures. Interjet said it spends several hours every night cleaning each aircraft. Hard surfaces such as tray tables, lavatories, armrests, seats, doors, document kiosk and all compartments including the flight deck are thoroughly cleaned with a high-grade disinfectant.

Interjet will be reducing seat capacity in some markets as well as waiving change fees for customer travel. “As the virus spreads, we are experiencing a decline in demand like other carriers,” said Julio Gamero, Chief Commercial Officer of Interjet. “While these decisions are difficult to make, they are necessary in order to reduce our overall cost structure and stay competitive in today’s market,” he added.

Gamero also said Interjet is waiving change fees for customers prevented from traveling for tickets purchased for travel between March 13 and March 31, 2020. Program specifics include –

  • Passengers purchasing tickets March 13, 2020, or later, can change their purchased ticket without a change fee for another flight on the same itinerary provided the fare is the same. Travel must be completed by May 31, 2020.
  • The passenger must pay any fare difference, if applicable, at the time of reticketing.
  • Passengers holding valid tickets purchased before March 13, 2020, can also change their ticket without a change fee for another flight on the same itinerary provided the fare is the same. Travel must also be completed by May 31, 2020.
