NEW YORK, Oct. 12, 2021 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ -- Global G.L.O.W., an international nonprofit organization dedicated to equipping girls with the skills and resources they need to advocate for themselves and their communities, has launched their annual month-long initiative titled OctobHER. Inspired by the United Nations' International Day of the Girl, OctobHER is dedicated to bringing together girls, thought leaders, partner organizations and allies to celebrate girlhood and address the critical issues that continue to hinder progress towards gender equality.
October 11 marks International Day of the Girl, an important opportunity to promote gender equality and amplify girls' voices while advancing dialogue on the unique challenges girls around the world continue to face. Global G.L.O.W. has taken the initiative to turn this day of recognition into a month-long celebration in order to build a better future and strengthen communities by mentoring girls to advocate for themselves.
A leadership committee of G.L.O.W. club girls from around the world informed this year's OctobHER program by compiling a list of the challenges girls face. Community leaders concluded that girls are impacted by every significant world issue and also that girls are the solution to these issues. In honor of girl boldness, this year's theme, Girls Ignite Change, will center on these key questions: What do we want the future to look like for girls? And what can we do today to make it possible?
"Global G.L.O.W. is proud to announce the 2nd annual OctobHER in celebration of International Day of the Girl," stated Global G.L.O.W. Founder and Executive Chair Kylie Schuyler. "OctobHER is an entire month dedicated to amplifying girls' voices, illuminating the challenges girls face, and celebrating the power of girls to address the world's issues."
In partnership with the Working Group on Girls, an NGO committee working for girls, with girls, at the United Nations, Global G.L.O.W. will hone in on the digital divide on day eight of their 11 Days of Action. Pre-existing access gaps have only widened during the COVID-19 pandemic, leaving millions of women and girls worldwide without access to opportunities in an increasingly inaccessible digital world. Global G.L.O.W. will lead the discussion on the digital divide's effect on girls' education globally.
Global G.L.O.W. is challenging people worldwide to reflect on the past to look into the future. Launching a social media campaign as part of celebrations for OctobHER, the organization invites everyone to share a throwback photo and/or video of themselves at 14 years old, using the hashtag #14YearOldMe. Activist Mari Copeny, globally known as "Little Miss Flint", and advocate Deja Foxx will participate in amplifying the campaign. Global G.L.O.W. will use the accrued contributions to spread awareness and the importance of advocacy, addressing the critical issues impacting girls today, celebrating the progress we have made and highlighting the steps to be taken.
"Girls aspire to and are capable of igniting change if they have access to basic resources such as family support, financial help and guidance on how to respond in difficult situations," said GLOW Club participant Grace Rita (Côte d'Ivoire). "Girls must be educated so we can fulfill our dreams. We have big dreams, and hope remains at the core of what makes these dreams come true."
