International Rescue Committee Will Tour The Control Group's Little Italy Office For Technology Opportunities
San Diego, California (PRWEB) April 20, 2015 -- On Wednesday April 22nd, 15-17 students and several members from the International Rescue Committee (IRC) Connect2Work Program will tour the Little Italy office of San Diego based The Control Group (TCG). The main purpose of the tour is to introduce the students to the many opportunities that lay ahead of them now that they have made their journey to the U.S.
The IRC is doing some great work through their children and youth programs, and according to the IRC, “Currently 20 million children and adolescents are uprooted from their homes either as refugees or internally displaced persons. In order to respond to this, the IRC promotes the protection and development of children and youth, from the earliest stages of an emergency, through post-conflict and recovery”.
The Control Group has formed close connections with the surrounding communities and their many charitable organizations, including IRC. Sean Shahrokhi, Director of Communications and Public Relations at TCG, has his own personal connection. Sean and his family fled Iran during the peak of the Iran/Iraq war. They suffered many hardships during the time of the 1979 Islamic Revolution before he and his mother finally fled to America in 1981 after seeking asylum in Germany for a year. Sean’s father spent nearly 3 more years in Iran as a Captain in the Iranian Air Force before seizing an opportunity to escape. His father came to the States to reunite with Sean and his mother with nothing more than the promise of freedom and the American Dream.
Sean’s story is just one of many similar stories and organizations like the IRC help to offer their clients another chance at life, liberty, and freedom. The Control Group is extremely excited at the opportunity to help lend a hand to the IRC cause.
Here are some compelling statistics regarding refugees, according to the UNHCR - The UN Refugee Agency, “At least 558,600 individual asylum applications were registered in 172 countries or territories during the first half of 2014, some 18 per cent more than during the same period in 2013 (456,000)...Germany (67,400) received the highest number of new asylum applications...Germany was followed by the United States of America with an estimated 47,500 new asylum applications most of them from Mexico (6,600), China (6,400), Guatemala (3,700), and El Salvador (3,700)...Syrians were the largest group of asylum-seekers worldwide during the reporting period, with a total of 59,600 Iraqis were the second largest group of asylum-seekers with a total of 28,900...Other important source countries of asylum-seekers were Afghanistan (26,400), Eritrea (23,300), the Democratic Republic of the Congo (21,700), and Ukraine (20,300)...By the middle of the year, close to 1.3 million individuals awaited decisions on their asylum claims…”
