New York recently passed a law allowing abortions up until nine months. The action taken by Twitter this morning to suspend the account of the movie "Unplanned" on its debut weekend was completely unacceptable.
"Unplanned," tells the story of a former abortion clinic director Abby Johnson, who changed her mind and became a strong pro-life advocate. The movie depicts her transition. Twitter should not be favoring sides of the debate or putting its hand on the scale to unduly influence the public discussion.
Chuck Konzelman, the co-director and co-writer, stated, "It's a sad state of affairs when the right to free speech gets shut down with the flick of a switch." "It is a sad time we live in when corporations can remove individual's freedom of speech at will. When did we empower these corporations to have such authority? More importantly, why do we empower them to do so?" Cary Solomon, the co-writer and co-director of the film.
Twitter's response was that they suspended by accident and they later restored the account. We hear this response from Twitter all too often and these errors have a propensity to always affect one side of the political debate.
