Effective digital marketing is necessary for small and mid-sized businesses to thrive. Digital marketing has changed rapidly in every year of its 30-year history. Derek Chew, CEO of Fullmoon Digital, guides companies through the Dos and Don'ts of hiring a digital marketing agency in 2023.

For example, he advises looking for a digital agency with an established track record and excellent communication. Another enduring recommendation is to ask potential agencies about their strategy, specializations, and past success.

Between 2017 and 2020, the number of advertising agencies in the United States exploded by about a factor of six, from 13,740 to 78,883.(3) With more agencies needing more skills to succeed in digital marketing, companies are challenged to uncover a potential digital marketing partner's value.

For 2023, Fullmoon Digital has some warnings and advice. First, if an agency's promises sound too good to be true, they are. Businesses should be wary of agencies that try to guarantee to deliver spectacular results quickly.(4) Of course, that's what businesses want to hear, but the reality of today's digital marketing landscape is that quick results are rarely long-lasting and can make the future harder, not easier.(5)

"Long-lasting results require outstanding communication between the business and its digital marketing agency," Chew states.

For this reason, he also recommends avoiding abrasive or aggressive personalities. Additionally, he cautions businesses against account managers with too many clients. Someone with 15 to 25 clients cannot develop personalized, effective digital marketing campaigns that generate success.

Instead, Fullmoon Digital encourages that companies approach their digital marketing agency as a strategic partner alliance in which your combined expertise should create greater value than you can do alone.(6) Alignment is essential. What goals are you teaming up to accomplish?

An agency with the potential to be a trusted partner will focus on the long game rather than the quick buck. They should be positioned and ready to pivot and shift their strategy if an approach isn't working, maintaining focus on the long-term vision of increasing visibility and market share for their partner clients.
