Is There a Science to Hiring? Demand for Scientists Grows 6%
New York, NY (PRWEB) July 31, 2013 -- During June of 2013, more than 79,000 job ads were available online for Scientists in the United States, according to WANTED Analytics™ (http://www.wantedanalytics.com), the leading source of real-time business intelligence for the talent marketplace. There is high demand for science related professionals, yet employers struggle to recruit enough qualified talent due to competition, niche job requirements, and high barriers to entry. After strong hiring demand in 2012 and the first half of 2013, the number of science job ads grew 6% in June compared to one year ago. In addition, hiring is up 75% over the past 4 years.
Among the industries with the highest demand for scientists were conservation programs, colleges and universities, pharmaceutical manufacturing, general and surgical hospitals, and research and development. In addition, the most commonly advertised job titles for science related occupations are:
1. Laboratory Technician
2. Research Assistant (or Research Associate)
3. Scientist
4. Chemist
5. Analytical Chemist
6. Microbiologist
7. Psychologist
8. Field Technician
9. Environmental Scientist
10. Clinical Research Assistant
The five metropolitan areas with the highest volume of science job ads during June were New York, San Francisco, Boston, Los Angeles, and Washington (DC). Despite having the most demand, the number of jobs in New York declined about 9% from one year ago. Boston and Washington, DC also saw fewer ads in June than the same time period in 2012. San Francisco had the highest increase of these 5 cities, up 19% from last year. Los Angeles was close, with 18% growth compared to June 2012.
With increasing hiring demand, Scientists are likely to be difficult-to-recruit. With more than 6,400 employers currently sourcing for various science professionals, there is heavy competition to attract qualified talent. According to the Hiring Scale, the locations currently experiencing some of the most difficult conditions for recruiting this talent are Nashville (Tennessee) and Newark (New Jersey.) In these areas, there is higher demand by employers in comparison to the available, local talent pool. This factor not only contributes to more difficult recruiting, but also increases the time-to-fill, with ads remaining online for an average of 7.5 weeks.
The Hiring Scale™ also shows that the current locations with the least difficult conditions for sourcing Scientists are Wilmington (North Carolina) and Augusta (Georgia.) While the US average Hiring Scale score is 65 (out of a possible 99, with 99 denoting the hardest-to-fill,) these cities score lower than 10. Recruiters in these two locations are likely to have more potential candidates to choose among and spend a shorter time sourcing candidates than the rest of the United States. Online job ads in these areas are posted for an average of 6 weeks.
The Hiring Scale measures conditions in local job markets by comparing hiring demand and labor supply. The Hiring Scale is part of the WANTED Analytics platform that offers business intelligence for the talent marketplace.
