ISPA Releases Its 2018 Mattress Industry Trends Report: Using a More Inclusive Methodology, Report Includes Data on Imports, Too.
The International Sleep Products Association (ISPA), the trade association for the mattress industry, released its 2018 Mattress Industry Trends Report today. This year's report implements several important enhancements.
ALEXANDRIA, Va., May 20, 2019 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ -- The International Sleep Products Association (ISPA), the trade association for the mattress industry, released the 2018 Mattress Industry Trends Report today. This document delivers the latest and most comprehensive shipment and sales data available from any source on the mattress industry's current and historical trends. In response to the industry's ongoing demand for better market intelligence, this year's report implements several important enhancements.
Specifically, the 2018 Report now includes combined U.S. market data for mattresses and foundations (including not only traditional stationary foundations, but also foldable and motion foundations) that are both produced in the United States and imported. Historically, ISPA separately reported U.S.-produced bedding and imports.
The report also combines data for all imported products into one chart, allowing readers to analyze all imported products (including mattresses, traditional stationary foundations, foundations with legs, foldable foundations with legs and motion foundations) at the same time. Finally, we have added an infographic that allows the reader to see year-over-year changes in the industry at a glance.
"The products sold in the U.S. mattress market continue to evolve, and the sources of those products are changing," noted ISPA President Ryan Trainer. "The 2018 Report reflects efforts to work with industry participants and U.S. Customs and Border Protection to collect relevant data and to present that information in formats that are easier for our members to use."
Based on this new perspective, the report estimates that U.S. sales of mattresses and stationary foundations from all sources (including imports) grew modestly in 2018, but that the unit shipments and value of just U.S.-produced products fell below 2016 levels. Compared to 2017, U.S. mattress producers shipped 2.4% fewer million units in 2018, valued at $8.3 billion.
Overall, the Average Unit Price (AUP) for all U.S.-produced mattresses and stationary foundations increased modestly in 2018 compared to 2017, with mattress prices decreasing while stationary foundation prices posted an increase.

As a result of these efforts, our published data for both the total U.S. market and imports are more accurate and relevant to our members' needs.
