Ivey Engineering, Inc., (IEI), an engineering consulting firm, is pleased to announce that Sydney Taylor of Foxfield, Colo., is the winner of the winter 2020 bi-annual scholarship essay contest. She was awarded $1,000, is currently a junior at Brigham Young University-Idaho and is majoring in English.

"I was thrilled to find out I won the scholarship and enjoyed researching fire sprinklers to write the essay," says Taylor, after finding out she won the scholarship.

Taylor chose English as her major since it will allow her to specialize in a variety of fields. After graduating from a charter high school with her associate's degree, she attended one semester at BYU-Idaho. Soon after, she left for Uruguay to serve a mission for her church for 18 months, but returned home early due to the pandemic.

"I haven't had a whole lot of time to explore my options after college, and I'm trying to figure out what I want to do," she says.

Taylor competed with more than 100 other college students from the United States and Canada. Applicants were required to write an 800- to 1,000-word essay on one of several topics and were judged for creativity and originality. Taylor's winning essay discusses four types of fire sprinkler systems and that each has its own unique uses, strengths and applications.

"Understanding fire sprinkler systems is crucial for engineers, architects and construction workers as they create and maintain buildings, so that the right system can be used in every case," Taylor explains in her essay. "Fire sprinkler systems avert countless disasters annually, and moderate the severity of countless more," she says.

"Sydney's essay is well written and creative in how she introduced the information," says Bill Ivey, vice-president of IEI. "Based on the quality of her essay, you know she spent considerable time doing research on the subject," he says.

Taylor is exploring several career options in the future after graduating from college—a higher degree in psychology or possibly a career in technical writing.

"Ultimately, I want to find work that is fulfilling and that will allow me to care for the family which I hope to have," Taylor says.

In total, the IEI scholarship program, in its fifth year, has awarded $8,000 to university students. Any potential or current college or university undergraduate student within the United States or Canada is able to apply for the scholarship. The next deadline for essay submissions is May 1, 2021.
