As the story opens, readers are introduced to Jeremiah Knox, a 19-year-old from Stradbally, Ireland, studying law in Edinburgh, Scotland. A youthful idealist and member of the Fenian Brotherhood, Jeremiah is committed to the removal of the British from Ireland and dedicated to the proposition of Home Rule for the Irish. While preparing for a legal career to pursue these goals, he becomes a practical and willing warrior for the cause.
As a leader in the Brotherhood, Jeremiah creates a plan to raid a British railcar containing ammunition and weapons. When a snitch reveals the plot to the authorities, he is tried for treason and jailed. Because the Crown thinks the young man is a disruptive and potentially dangerous threat to peace in Ireland, Jeremiah is expelled from the country and deported to Boston, where his uncle is a well-established lawyer. Promised an apprenticeship in his uncle's firm, he learns that a different arrangement for his future was made between the court and his family. He is sent to a stone quarry in Worcester where the court's plan for years of hard labor will remove his passion for the Fenian cause.
The novel is based on extensive research into the Irish-American immigrant experience during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. It reveals an America booming with immigrants, creating a demand for churches and chapels to support their religious aspirations. When the field of law becomes a diminishing option, Jeremiah's values, work ethic and determination push him toward a skill in stone cutting he had developed in his youth under the tutelage of his grandfather. As his expertise as a stonecutter builds, he realizes the stone quarry, seen first as a prison, is a place of opportunity. His love of the law is slowly set aside. From backbreaking work in the quarries, he gradually finds opportunity and eventually passion in creating elegant tombstones and, later, altars and statues for cathedrals.

About The Author
J.F. Foran has worked internationally as a management consultant for over thirty years. His consulting covered corporate strategy for multinational organizations and public policy for federal and state governments. He was a founder of Strategic Decisions Group and has served on the boards of several public and private companies. He has also served on the board of directors for Save the Children, the Belvedere-Tiburon Library and the Decision Education Foundation. He is a Guest Lecturer at Stanford University's Department of Management Science and Engineering. He was also a weapons systems analyst for the U.S. Department of Defense and the U.S. Navy. He received his undergraduate degree from Middlebury College and his master's degree from the Wharton School. He currently lives in Tiburon, California with his wife Karen.
