Janitorial Company's Small Act Will Have Big Environmental Impact
Vanguard Cleaning Systems of Louisville and Lexington has teamed up with Trees Louisville, donating a percentage of profits from paper sales to reforestation projects in Louisville.
LOUISVILLE, Ky., Feb. 3, 2020 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ -- Vanguard Cleaning Systems of Louisville and Lexington (Vanguard), a local leader in franchise based commercial janitorial services, has teamed up with Trees Louisville in an effort to attack the growing Heat Island effect in downtown Louisville. This past December, Vanguard donated 1% of the paper supplies purchased by its customers to Trees Louisville, directly funding the Rubbertown Corridor Initiative which aims to plant over 10,000 trees in the next 3 years.
What is an "Urban Heat Island"?
An Urban Heat Island is when a city is significantly warmer than its surrounding rural areas due to things like heat retention from asphalt as well as buildings and cars exuding heat.
Between 2005-2012 Louisville's tree canopy depleted at a rate of roughly 54,000 trees a year. This depletion rate earned Louisville the unfortunate title of fastest warming city in the United States in 2012.
"Without a robust tree canopy," said Cindi Sullivan, Executive Director/President of Trees Louisville, "our air quality is going to continue to decrease, stormwater and flooding from these extreme weather events is going to increase. There will be more health problems."
