"Each year, NGC's Award of Excellence recognizes exceptional individuals, organizations or institutions that advance our organization's goals and purposes," said Gay Austin, president, National Garden Clubs Inc., in recognizing Gibb’s contributions. The Award of Excellence is NGC’s highest honor for non-members.

Gibbs spent 30 years transforming pastures, hillsides and woodlands in Ball Ground, Georgia into his world-class Gibbs Gardens. The 326-acre property includes four feature gardens: the Japanese Gardens, Water Lily Gardens, Manor House Gardens and Daffodil Gardens and 12 seasonal gardens.

Garden Clubs Key to His Success

“Garden clubs have been a major factor in the success of Gibbs Gardens,” Jim Gibbs said as he accepted the Award of Excellence at the banquet. “In my early career I presented before-and-after garden design programs to garden clubs in Atlanta, across Georgia and the Southeast. Garden club members often referred friends and family to Gibbs Landscape Company. If it had not been for your support, I would never have had the ability to develop Gibbs Gardens. I thank each of you and share this Award of Excellence with everyone in the National Garden Clubs.”

The Garden Club of Georgia presented Gibbs with its 2019 Award of Merit on April 17 and nominated him for the NCG Award of Excellence.

A founding member of the Atlanta Botanical Garden and lifetime trustee, Gibbs served as president and founder of the award-winning Gibbs Landscaping Co. for more than 40 years. He earned a bachelor's degree in science, majoring in horticulture and minoring in landscape architecture, at the University of Georgia in Athens.

Gibbs received two national landscape awards presented at the White House in Washington D.C. in addition to the more than 300 landscape awards Gibbs Landscape Company and Gibbs personally received.

He also is the author of "Gibbs Gardens: Reflections on a Gardening Life," which follows his 30-year-old journey to bring his vision to fruition.
