John Murtha, General Manager of the Omni Parker House in Boston and Area Managing Director for Omni Hotels and Resorts was honored by New England Inns & Resorts Association (NEIRA) with their Masters of New England Innkeeping Award on October 30th at the Samoset Resort in Rockport, Maine, announced NEIRA CEO Beth Steucek. NEIRA’s highest award honors hospitality professionals who have made a lasting contribution to the culture of New England hospitality.

“John is well known for his leadership in the hospitality industry,” said Steucek, “Nominated by his peers for this award, and as a past Chairman of the Association, John has been a source of inspiration for hoteliers and Innkeepers all over New England with his deep industry knowledge and breadth of experience.”

Murtha is a 40-year veteran of the industry with 25 years of experience as general manager of urban and resort hotels in the U.S. and Caribbean. Since 2007 Murtha has been General Manager of Boston’s Omni Parker House, the longest continuously operating hotel in the United States, and is the area Managing Director responsible for the Omni Bedford Springs Resort, Omni New Haven Hotel, Omni Providence Hotel and the Omni Mt. Washington Resort.

During the award presentation a fifteen-minute video documented Murtha’s management philosophy and style. “Take great care of your staff and don’t micromanage them,” said Murtha. “Hire the best person for the job and then leave them alone. It’s so important to take care of your staff- and that’s everyone on staff. You really have to focus on and invest time in the team. After all, they are the ones who produce the bottom line. They’re the ones who create that great experience for the guest.”

Twenty years of Murtha’s hospitality career was spent with Sonesta International Hotels Corporation at the company’s properties in Cambridge, Massachusetts; Portland, Maine; Curacao; Netherlands Antilles; and Bermuda and functioned as Sonesta’s Corporate Director of Advertising from 2002 to 2005.

Murtha is a Chairman Emeritus of the Massachusetts Lodging Association, (MLA) and is currently Chair of the Nominating and By-Laws Review Committees as well as Chair of MLA’s Political Action Committee. In 2010, he received an American Hotel and Lodging Association State Leadership Award for his service to MLA.

Murtha has been a mentor to future hospitality students as an adjunct instructor in destination marketing and hospitality management at Boston University’s School of Hospitality Administration and is also Vice Chair of the University of New Hampshire International Hospitality Management Advisory Board.

In 2012, John was named “Outstanding General Manager of the Year” by the Massachusetts Lodging Association, received Omni Hotels & Resorts “People’s’ Choice” award for high levels of manager development and associate satisfaction scores and was inducted into the MLA Hall of Fame in the hotelier category. Murtha graduated cum laude from the University of New Hampshire Hotel Administration program in 1975 and was elected to Eta Sigma Delta in 2007.

A Massachusetts native and avid runner, Murtha finished the 2019 Boston Marathon, and raised $12,000 for Lazarus House Ministries of Lawrence, MA, near his home in Andover where he lives with his wife and daughter.
