Johns Hopkins Opens Doors with New Online Master of Engineering Management
(PRWEB) June 09, 2014 -- Johns Hopkins Engineering for Professionals, the division of the Johns Hopkins University Whiting School of Engineering that administers part-time graduate programs, has announced the launch of a new master’s degree in engineering management.
"Engineers with expert technical skills will eventually face a point in their careers when leadership positions begin knocking," said Joseph Suter, chair of the Engineering Management program at Johns Hopkins Engineering for Professionals. "Our engineering management program is unique because it prepares students to succeed in these high-level leadership positions while also enhancing their ability to take on increased technical responsibilities."
Management courses will be the core of the program, but students will also work within one of 14 technical concentration areas that span engineering disciplines from cybersecurity to mechanical engineering. The curriculum provides an opportunity to build both technical and leadership skills so that upon graduation, students will be better suited to contribute to multi-disciplinary engineering management teams.
The engineering management program is designed to meet the needs of practicing engineers with busy schedules. The instructors, who are themselves technical leaders and executives, will discuss real-world challenges in convenient formats such as online courses and the virtual live classroom model (a specially designed format where, with the aid of video conferencing technology, classroom-based and remote students attend live classes in a synchronous learning environment).
"The Whiting School of Engineering has been offering a master’s degree in engineering management for full-time students since 2009," said Dexter G. Smith, associate dean of Johns Hopkins Engineering for Professionals. "Given the growing demand for a similar degree for part-time students, we’re excited to see our new, highly flexible engineering management program get off the ground."
To be considered for the new program, applicants must have earned a previous degree in a science or engineering field, and have at least two years of relevant work experience. Johns Hopkins Engineering for Professionals is accepting applications for this program for the fall 2014 term. Online course options depend on the concentration selected. Interested students can attend a free online information session Tuesday, May 27, 2014, from 7 to 8 p.m. EDT. A recorded version will also be available after the session.
