DENVER, Oct. 15, 2018 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ -- Jon G. Dishler. MD, is pleased to announce that a new undiscovered choice in laser vision correction, the SMILE® procedure for astigmatism, is now available in America. LASIK expert and refractive surgery pioneer, Dr. Dishler, is the behind the scenes Zeiss consultant, innovator, and lead medical monitor for the latest generation in laser eye surgery. Dr. Jon Dishler performed the first SMILE with astigmatism procedures on October 11, 2018 at 8:30am Mountain Standard Time.

"For over a decade we have been working on the SMILE® procedure. No other laser platform has been able to match the technology that the Zeiss VisuMax® can deliver to provide the accuracy for this procedure. The FDA approval of the Carl Zeiss SMILE w/astigmatism procedure®, is reminiscent of the time before LASIK got approved. SMILE is an undiscovered great procedure that will provide my patients a more desirable refractive alternative."

How is SMILE® different? The SMILE laser vision correction procedure can only be achieved by using the Carl Zeiss VisuMax® Femtosecond laser technology. SMILE with the Zeiss VisuMax® laser eliminates the need for 2 lasers, is quicker, and provides a more comfortable experience. The SMILE procedure is minimally invasive, one laser, one step. Unlike LASIK, there is no need for a corneal flap, no lifting the corneal flap, and no folding a flap back. The SMILE incision is much smaller than the circular incision needed for LASIK.

In the actual procedure, the VisuMax® laser laser places a series of pulses in the center of the pupil and these pulses create tiny water like bubbles that make a stencil like outline for the tissue (lenticule) that needs to be removed to change the shape of the cornea. The incision is a tiny 4 mm opening where the lenticule is then removed.

The visual results of SMILE is superb and complication are few.

Benefits of SMILE are mainly attributed to the fact that there is no corneal flap to heal and less disruption of the outer layer of the cornea. Therefore, patient comfort, lower risk of post-op complications, from a wrinkled or misaligned flap, less incidence of dry eye, and the ability for the patient to resume more rigorous physical activity sooner are some advantages of SMILE over LASIK. An added bonus that many woman find appealing is that there is no restriction in wearing eye make up for a week.

Who can qualify for the SMILE for astigmatism procedure? Anyone that fits the criteria of any elective refractive eye procedure, of healthy eyes other than farsightedness (hyperopia).

Always on the forefront, Dr. Dishler was the first surgeon in North America to use the Zeiss VisuMax® technology in 2007. In fact in 2006, he received a German license to practice medicine and performed one of the first SMILE procedures. Dr. Dishler is the most experienced surgeon in the USA to utilize Zeiss refractive laser technology.and is the regional authority in training other refractive surgeons in the "Dishler Method" using the Zeiss VisuMax and SMILE procedure.

Dr. Dishler is the only LASIK surgeon in Colorado that uses Zeiss VisuMax® femtosecond technology, and has experience in the new SMILE laser vision correction option. To begin, the SMILE w/astigmatism procedure will be offered by a select group of doctors that already use the Zeiss VisuMax and then widely available.

If you have an interest in finding out if you are a good candidate for this new refractive procedure, then please make an appointment for a consultation with Dishler Laser Institute. Dr. Dishler and his team will let you know if the SMILE laser eye correction procedure is the right choice for you.

This is a surgical procedure and results may vary. Consult with your doctor who can best advise you if SMILE might be an option for you. Also review the FDA website for details on risks and benefits of the SMILE procedure.

ReLEx® SMILE® from ZEISS made its U.S. debut in 2016. In the last 10 years, over 1.5 million SMILE® treatments have been performed worldwide constituting over 10% of global laser vision correction procedures. To date, there are over 1700 surgeons using SMILE® in over 70 countries. The technology behind SMILE was recently featured in the Scientific Background on the Nobel Prize in Physics 2018. Dr. Gérard Mourou and Dr. Donna Strickland were awarded the Nobel Prize for his method to generate high-intensity ultrashort optical pulses. Their invention of so-called chirped pulse amplification is essential to generate the ultrashort laser pulses of the ZEISS VisuMax femtosecond laser system. ReLEx® SMILE® is a registered trademark of Carl Zeiss Meditec. For more information about ReLEx® SMILE®, visit http://www.zeiss.com.
