WEST HARTFORD, Conn., April 24, 2019 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ -- Nearly 30 students from West Hartford's Hall High School, Conard High School and Kingswood Oxford School and nearby Newington High School will get an inside look at the range of businesses and career opportunities in West Hartford Center in the 6th Annual JA Career Walk on May 3.
Created in 2014 by blumshapiro, PBI Financial Group and Junior Achievement of Southwest New England, the JA Career Walk seeks to prepare students for choosing a potential career by gaining a better understanding of job opportunities in their own community.
"Our annual JA Career Walk provides students the knowledge and insights necessary to help them confidently plan their future course of study and job readiness paths," said Joseph A. Kask, Chief Executive Officer of blumshapiro. "This unique opportunity to meet professionals in an active, real-life business environment opens their eyes to career possibilities they may not have even considered."
The JA Career Walk begins and ends at blumshapiro, located at 29 South Main Street in West Hartford. All students will participate in an orientation session using the JA Job Shadow curriculum. The curriculum gives students an overview of the world of work and the skills needed to succeed on the job. The orientation will be hosted by Tom DeVitto, Chief Marketing Officer of blumshapiro and co-founder of the JA Career Walk.
Joining the JA Career Walk orientation session at blumshapiro will be West Hartford Mayor Shari Cantor and West Hartford Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Christopher Conway. Both will speak to the students and join them in the various local business visits.
In addition to blumshapiro, other West Hartford Center businesses that will be welcoming the students during the JA Career Walk are Bridgewater Chocolates, Charles Schwab, Fathom, Iris Photography and Lux Bond & Green.
Each business will provide an overview and tour, and discuss the type of occupations they employ and qualities they look for when hiring people. Each visit will last 40 minutes. The program ends at 12:30 p.m.
JA of Southwest New England's volunteer-delivered kindergarten through 12th-grade programs foster work readiness, entrepreneurship, and financial literacy skills, and use experiential learning to annually inspire 47,000 Connecticut students to dream big and reach their potential.
