Born and raised in Zwingle, Iowa, O'Connell began his rodeo career at a young age, competing in local events and honing his skills on the family farm. After graduating from high school, he pursued a career in rodeo, competing in amateur events across the country. In 2015, O'Connell made his debut on the Professional Cowboys Association (PRCA) circuit and quickly made a name for himself. He won the PRCA's Rookie of the Year award that same year and has since become a top contender in the bareback riding category. He has won numerous titles and accolades, including the 2016, 2017 and 2018 PRCA World Championships in bareback riding.
"I found bareback riding when I was a senior in high school and I absolutely fell in love with it," said O'connell. "I just kind of got obsessed with the sport and how it worked, the ins and outs and the fine details. And here we are."
Off the rodeo circuit, O'Connell is a devoted husband and father, and a proud ambassador for the sport of rodeo. He is passionate about inspiring the next generation of rodeo athletes and works tirelessly to promote the sport and its values.
