JWU Honored with Prestigious Burke Award for Experiential Education

Providence, RI (PRWEB) November 14, 2014 -- Johnson & Wales University (JWU) was recently honored with the William M. Burke Presidential Award for Excellence in Experiential Education. This prestigious award was presented by the National Society for Experiential Education (NSEE) and funded by The Washington Center for Academic Internships and Seminars in memory of their founder William M. Burke. It recognizes an institution that has made significant contributions to experiential education. JWU Chancellor John Bowen accepted the award at the 2014 NSEE Conference held in Baltimore, MD on behalf of the university. The Burke Award also provides a $2000 scholarship to be given to a deserving student at Johnson & Wales University who is involved in experiential learning.

“There is no doubt that I share Bill Burke’s passion for the power and value of experiential education,” said Chancellor Bowen. “I have dedicated most of my professional life to finding ways to give students the chance to apply classroom theories in a real world setting. But none of that passion would have been realized had it not been for the support, encouragement and vision of my colleagues at Johnson & Wales University.”

Facts and figures about experiential education at JWU:

  • More than 4,200 Johnson & Wales students participate in internships annually at some nineteen hundred sites in 50 states and 35 different countries. Years ago, the model of cooperative education began with companies like Marriott International, ARAMARK and Hilton Hotels.
  • Over 500 Johnson & Wales students participate in study abroad locations all over the world.
  • JWU looks for opportunities to partner with other institutions in ways that benefit both institutions. Two years ago, a partnership began with Tulane University School of Medicine to teach students about the impact of food and diet on health and about nutritional strategies for preventive care.
  • Johnson & Wales created the Internship Support Fund to provide stipends for students so they no longer have to turn down a desirable internship - one more aligned with their career goals - because it was unpaid. These opportunities have opened doors for them to seek employment in the non-profit sector, an option some may not have considered prior to their internship. This program represents an annual investment of over $3 million.
