Kelowna Moving Company Benefits From Membership with United Van Lines
Kelowna moving company Bekins Kelowna Moving and Storage joins other Canadian moving industry leaders at a convention for members of Canada's largest moving network, United Van Lines.
KELOWNA, British Columbia, April 26, 2019 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ -- A local moving company continues to reap the benefits of being an affiliate member of United Van Lines (UVL), the largest network of moving companies in Canada that is 100 percent owned and operated by its members.
As a member of this national and North American van line network since 2015, Bekins Kelowna Moving and Storage has been able to provide moving services across Canada with the help of more than 150 agents around the country as well as more than 400 agents in the US.
"United Van Lines is unique in that all the moving company owners who make up the membership are also the shareholders," says Bekins Kelowna General Manager Nathan Miller. "The van line has a staff who organizes and dispatches the moves across Canada with the help of the agents. The van line does not own any trucks. It's the member agents who provide the actual moving services across Canada."
Miller recently returned from a UVL convention in Santa Monica, CA, where more than 40 Canadian member agents got together to discuss industry news and the best practices on how to improve quality and customer service. Members also attended workshops and an awards presentation.
"We tend to meet up in early-spring as we enter our peak season. There are a lot of great takeaways from the convention that we can bring back to our branches and put into practice," says Miller.
Convention participants, including Canadian agent owners, agent member upper management staff, UVL staff, and relevant trades representatives also learned about the contract that UVL holds with the federal government.
"Four years ago, we set up a two-year contract with the federal government to provide moving services. It has been renewed to six years, which takes us to 2021. United Van Lines holds the majority share of that contract between three major van lines in Canada. We started at 45 percent of the share and are now up to 52 percent. This is a big deal, as it shows the quality of service that we have provided," says Miller, adding that member affiliates help government offices with local moving services as well as providing long distance movers for any relocations.
"The work is highly regulated. There are lots of rules and policies that need to be followed properly. All those things feed into a quarterly evaluation. If we don't do good work, we could lose the government contract."
Another service that UVL member agents provide is full container residential and commercial moving services for local, regional, long distance and international moves.
Bekins Kelowna movers offer four different container sizes, including a standard 20-foot overseas container.
"We offer professional services, where our movers in Kelowna will fully pack the container and move it for the client. We also offer a DIY container, where clients can load it themselves, and we can move it for them," says Miller. "This is something that many other moving companies don't provide, but it is possible for us because of our affiliation with United Van Lines."
