KFC Takes Top Honor, Wins Foodservice Package of the Year Award
Innovative paperboard foodservice package combines branding, functionality and convenience to win the Foodservice Packaging Institute and QSR magazine's 2019 Foodservice Packaging Awards competition.
FALLS CHURCH, Va., Nov. 12, 2019 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ -- The Foodservice Packaging Institute and QSR magazine's 2019 Foodservice Packaging Awards competition named KFC the winner of the Package of the Year honor. The company won for its Cinnabon® Dessert Biscuits packaging, manufactured by WestRock.
"It wasn't too many years ago when packaging was an afterthought for most foodservice brands," said Natha Dempsey, president of FPI. "Today, we're excited to see the thought the brands are putting into the packaging. It was interesting to note how many entries showed excellence in multiple categories. KFC's Package of the Year is a great example."
In addition to winning top honors, KFC earned first place in the Excellence in New Menu Launch category. The company designed a functional and appealing folding paperboard carton to launch this new product that united two well-known brands. Judges felt that the packaging cleverly included branding, functionality, convenience and manufacturing innovation. They were also impressed with the audible click on closure.
First place winners in the other categories included:
- Excellence in brand delivery: Long John Silver's and Baldwin& for Long John Silver's in-store packaging design system.
- Innovation in convenience: Genpak for its Clover line of containers.
- Innovation in manufacturing: Eco-Products, PBC. for its VanguardTM line of containers.
- The "wow" factor: Bahama Buck's for its Island Pack manufactured by DanHil Containers.
For nearly two decades, the trade association and trade publication have partnered in these bi-annual awards to recognize innovation in the foodservice packaging industry. Many of this year's entries reflected growing trends in both the packaging and restaurant industries.
"These entries show that the industry is addressing the changing needs of the customer, whether this means new packaging to support the growing delivery trend, grab-and-go options, or new products and materials designed to be recycled and / or composted," said Dempsey.
Award recipients were recognized during FPI's fall conference and featured in the November issue of QSR magazine. A full listing of award winners may be found on QSR's website. Product images of all winners may be found in FPI's photo gallery.
