The scientific meeting kicks off with a keynote presentation: complexities of characterizing mineral particle toxicity at the pulmonary interface, delivered by Dr. Christopher Weis, Toxicology Liaison and Senior Advisor, Office of the Director, National Institutes of Health, NIEHS (National Institute of Environmental Health Science), National Toxicology Program. Dr. Weis will pull from his expertise of over 30 years characterizing environmental exposures and hazards for chemical and biological materials, to explore a forensic case history and review the important role of the immune system’s cellular response in the lung following inhalation of elongate mineral particles.
“Thousands of Americans die each year from exposure to elongate mineral particles, but the regulatory definitions have not kept pace with our understanding of the pathology. Out-of-date laws and antiquated laboratory analyses designed 50 years ago to protect the public from asbestos, a type of elongate mineral, do not address the diseases that we’re seeing or magnitude of the exposure,” said Dr. Christopher Weis, Senior Advisor and Toxicology Liaison, National Institutes of Health, NIEHS.
Following, Dr. Henry C. Lee, one of the world’s foremost forensic scientists whose work has made him a landmark in criminal investigations, and bringing forth decades of notable expertise in the most challenging cases spanning 50 years, will deliver a keynote discussing pattern evidence reconstruction, what is pattern evidence and where to find it at a crime scene, and the steps and methods in the process of classification and reconstruction.
