Award recognizes excellence in book editorial and design for independent publishers
NEW YORK, June 1, 2023 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ -- The Lakota Language Consortium (LLC) is pleased to announce that the 3rd Edition of the New Lakota Dictionary has been awarded the Gold medal in the Reference category of the prestigious IBPA Benjamin Franklin Award program. The program recognizes excellence in book editorial and design and is regarded as one of the highest national honors for independent publishers.
"This is a significant achievement that is a testament to the dedication of more than 400 Elders and Native Speakers involved in producing the new Lakota dictionary," said Alex Fire Thunder (Oglála Lakȟóta), LLC Deputy Director. "Having this dictionary means that we can pass on our language and traditions to future generations to ensure that they remain a vital part of who we are as Lakota people."
The 3rd Edition of the New Lakota Dictionary is the most comprehensive and up-to-date Lakota language dictionary available, with 41,000 entries and 50,000 example sentences. This is the second time LLC has been recognized by IBPA, with the first edition of the Lakota Dictionary receiving the Bronze award in 2009.
Sharing his praise for the latest edition, Ben Black Bear Jr. (Sičháŋǧu Lakȟóta), LLC Board Vice Chairman, commented, "I am truly happy with the updated dictionary as it caters to the needs of young people and anyone learning Lakota today.
