SAN DIEGO, Feb. 20, 2019 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ -- The Law Office of David P. Shapiro, a San Diego criminal defense firm, has announced that it will be accepting applications for an educational scholarship for those who have been diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD or autism). The scholarship is in the amount of $1,000 and will be applied toward tuition for the winning applicant at a college, university, junior college, trade school, or vocational school.
The Centers for Disease Control determined that in 2018 approximately 1 in 59 children was diagnosed with ASD. The percentage is significantly higher for boys than for girls. It affects all ethnic groups. The best opportunity for healthy development among those with ASD is early intervention.
Young adults with autism face specific challenges. Over half of young adults diagnosed with ASD remain unemployed and are not enrolled in an institution of higher learning in the two years following high school. The team of attorneys and assistants at the Law Office of David P. Shapiro are hopeful this scholarship will jumpstart the pursuit of the higher education of all applicants, not only the winner.
Applications may be submitted by anyone who has been diagnosed with ASD or autism (DSM-V), and applicants need not be attending or enrolled in an educational program when their application is submitted.
