NEW YORK, May 11, 2020 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ -- Library Journal announced the 2020 Movers & Shakers, celebrating 46 people who are transforming how libraries deliver to their communities in the U.S. and beyond. The individuals were chosen for their dedication, ability to innovate, passion for the field, and impact on their local communities. The 2020 class is the 19th such group to be selected by the LJ editors to receive this honor, thanks to overall sponsor Baker & Taylor and to SAGE.
The 2020 Movers & Shakers were announced online throughout the week of May 4. There are six subcategories: Advocates, Change Agents, Community Builders, Digital Developers, Educators, and Innovators. The full class, along with a map of their geographic distribution, is available here. This latest cohort joins a group of outstanding library workers and supporters that is now nearly 1,000 strong.
The Movers & Shakers program was founded in 2002 with the goal of acknowledging a wide-range of individuals from around the world who have gone above and beyond to advance their libraries and the field as a whole, and better serve the communities they empower.
This year's Movers & Shakers hail from all sizes and types of library. Since the inception of the award, Movers & Shakers have closed opportunity gaps and expanded traditional perceptions of libraries, without turning away from those who value tradition. Successful at their work, these library professionals also move all libraries and the communities they serve toward a stronger future.
While chosen before the coronavirus pandemic hit the U.S., it's no surprise that several of these inspiring figures have led the field's pivot to innovative remote service while going above and beyond to help essential workers. Take Alex Gil, the Columbia University librarian who used his map skills to aid Puerto Rico's hurricane recovery; his most recent project is a collaboration with industrial design company Tangible Creative and 3-D printing company MakerBot, to print and distribute thousands of face shields for doctors and nurses.
