Live Vasectomy in Honor of a Movement for Responsible Masculinity: World Vasectomy Day Seattle

SEATTLE, Nov. 13, 2018 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ -- World Vasectomy Day is an annual celebration of responsible men, promoting positive masculinity and male engagement in family planning with more than 20,000 men participating in the event each year. The best way to demonstrate the ease of the procedure is streaming a live vasectomy and giving viewers the chance to ask the man questions about his experience in real time. This year, WVD will be streaming a vasectomy from the Dr. Snip Clinic in Seattle to the International Conference on Family Planning in Kigali, Rwanda as part of World Vasectomy Day on November 14.

World Vasectomy Day strives to normalize and destigmatize the procedure, while inspiring broader conversations about responsible masculinity and gender equality. One of the most effective ways to bust myths and misperceptions, and a quintessential part of World Vasectomy Day, is live-streaming discussions with men as they get their no-scalpel, no-needle vasectomy. Requiring just local anesthesia, the procedure is faster and less painful than a trip to the dentist.

World Vasectomy Day was founded by two-time Academy Award-nominated, four-time Emmy-winning, and Sundance Grand Jury Prize filmmaker Jonathan Stack. Despite its name, WVD's impact reverberates beyond one day of observance. It is an ongoing social media communications project that unites men, vasectomy providers, public and private health care stakeholders, global sponsors, and Ministries of Health and Public Planning in a mission to encourage men to take an active role in family planning and provide a meaningful contraceptive option to accomplish that.

Our World Vasectomy Day "Champion", a local Seattleite named Mark, has made a conscious and informed decision with his partner not to have any more children, and is rising up and shouldering the responsibility of family planning as an act of love. He is undergoing a vasectomy procedure performed by one of America's most experienced and committed vasectomists, Dr. Charles Wilson, a pioneer of the No-Scalpel Vasectomy at the Seattle Dr. Snip clinic. In addition to receiving his vasectomy on World Vasectomy Day, November 14, 2018, the Champion is also being profiled in an online video. The pre-recorded video and live vasectomy will be part of a global virtual event, engaging with Mexico, Kenya, Australia, the Philippines, Rwanda and beyond as part of a worldwide conversation about vasectomies as an "act of love". "We created the event to celebrate the men who rise up to participate in family planning out of love for their children, their wife and our future", added Stack.

Women continue to shoulder the burden of contraception, yet World Vasectomy Day has proven that when presented with accurate and compelling information, many men will rise up to share responsibility for family planning. About no-scalpel vasectomy: The tube connecting the testicle to the urethra, called the vas deferens, is cut and sealed to prevent sperm from leaving. After numbing, one or two small punctures are made on the scrotum, small enough that it does not require stitches. Sperm is then reabsorbed into the body – the same thing that happens if a man hasn't ejaculated in several days. The whole procedure takes about 15-20 minutes.
