Living with a Disability Magazine Publisher Says New JAMA Study is Wake-Up Call for People with Health Issues to Get in Treatment Right Now -- Not Later
San Antonio, TX (PRWEB) September 30, 2013 -- As part of its vision to help individuals with various disabling medical conditions get the timely information, advice and tips they need to live life to the fullest, the publishers of Living with a Disability magazine are advising people to take heed of a new study appearing in the August edition of the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) that is painting an alarmingly poor picture of health outcomes across the country.
The study, which is entitled “The State of US Health, 1990-2010: Burden of Diseases, Injuries, and Risk Factors,” and was led by researchers from the University of Washington’s Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation, concluded that despite the fact that the U.S. outspends all other countries in terms of healthcare research, the level of healthcare outcomes have fallen behind other wealthy nations who spend less -- especially with respect to chronic disability, which accounted for almost 50% of U.S. health loss in 2010.
Other disabling conditions that have risen steadily over the study’s two decade span include (but aren’t limited to) depression, low back pain, neck pain, high blood pressure, obesity and diabetes.
“This study is a very loud and long overdue wake-up call for people with a health condition to take immediate action, get in treatment as soon as possible, and regain control over their health -- because they simply can’t afford to be passive bystanders as far as their health outcomes are concerned,” commented Living With a Disability’s associate publisher Joshua C. Eyestone. “Understandably, getting in treatment isn’t going to be easy for everyone – especially those who are uninsured or financially indigent. It takes some work to find the right clinics. Most people can find access to treatment if they’re willing to put in the effort.”
Mr. Eyestone also noted that taking control over one’s health can be a key factor when it comes to winning disability benefits down the road.
“People also need to be aware that if they ever need to file for disability benefits, the Social Security Administration will be impressed by the fact that they took their health seriously and already sought or are seeking treatment – and, alternatively, they will be unimpressed and unsympathetic if treatment has been ignored or neglected. Winning disability benefits requires medical evidence. The bottom line is that anyone with a health condition that may ultimately become chronic and disabling should be aware that staying in treatment is essential for proving a disability case.”
