SYOSSET, N.Y., Feb. 20, 2020 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ -- In 1949 after World War II, Morton J. Lemkau and his father John Lemkau started Morton J. Lemkau Moving and Storage. They did so after working several years for a local moving company that existed at the time. They figured that if they were going to work as hard as they did, they might as well utilize their strong work ethic and skill sets to the best of their ability, and build a reputation that consisted of hard work, honesty, and exceptional customer service.
The company originated in Westbury, NY where they began working out of their home. They started by working with many residents on Long Island's north shore, which is also known as the Gold Coast. Morton Lemkau had worked for many families on the north shore caring for their polo ponies and race horses prior to the war. He enjoyed working with horses so much that he ended up being in the calvary throughout WWII. He often said it was luck, but those that know Morton Lemkau believe it was most likely more fate that played a role in his destiny. So as it turns out, when Morton J. Lemkau Moving and Storage started, they had a customer base that wanted them to move their horses to such places as Saratoga, NY and elsewhere as the racing seasons changed. As it turned out, many of those customers also inquired about moving household furnishings and other belongings, and from there the furniture moving began, and residential moves became somewhat routine, as did moving customers locally and long distance.
It took years for Morton J. Lemkau Moving and Storage to build up their reputation, as sales and marketing then were just not the same or as advanced as they are today, plus their overall sales and marketing strategy was really just a matter of doing a job right and providing added value with their work ethics. Basically, they relied on word of mouth advertising, which is still today the best advertising they have with approximately 75% of their business coming through direct referrals from past and present customers. In the 1970's Mr. Lemkau started utilizing little magnets with the company's name and telephone number printed on them. The magnets were usually in the shape of a house or a truck and were given to customers to put on their refrigerators. Alex Boncea, Owner/Operator of Morton J. Lemkau Moving and Storage stated, "It's not unusual for us to meet a customer today that tells us we moved them in their house 30 to 40 years ago, and some still have a magnet on their refrigerator. They usually tell me that they remember Morty Lemkau moving them in, and of course ask about him today. I let them know that he just retired last year (2019) at the age of 93, and that usually brings a smile to their face with fond memories and well wishes." Alex still talks to Morton on a regular basis.
As of 2019 Morton J. Lemkau Moving and Storage moved from Westbury, NY to Syosset, NY to a larger corporate office and truck lot. Today Morton J. Lemkau Moving and Storage continues to focus on residential moving throughout Long Island, which is the bulk of their business; however, it is not uncommon for them to do commercial jobs. Lemkau Movers are also piano moving specialists as well as church organ specialists. Lemkau Movers is a full service moving and storage company, and offers relocation services from Maine to North Carolina. Still today, Morton J. Lemkau Moving and Storage relies on their hard work, honesty and exceptional customer service to maintain their existing customer base, and their loyal multigenerational customers are still their best sales and marketing agents with their word of mouth referrals. Although the moving industry has changed throughout the years, Lemkau Movers continues to make their primary focus their customers, as they know, "Home is where the story begins."
