Lorena Ukanwa is the Recipient for the 2020-2021 Dr. Arthur A. Kezian DDS Science Scholarship!

LOS ANGELES, May 26, 2021 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ -- The Dr. Arthur A. Kezian DDS Science Scholarship has revealed its finalist for this year – congratulations to Lorena Ukanwa! Lorena is an aspiring student who just graduated from a post-baccalaureate program in the University at Buffalo in New York! She was recently sent an acceptance letter to the University of Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry and will attend the school during the fall term of 2021! She is working towards a career in psychiatry and has had a dream of becoming a doctor since she was eight years old! Her aunt served as a major role model for her. For Lorena, her aunt was her first encounter with a Black, female doctor. Ever since, Lorena has aspired to become a doctor herself and help her community just as she had seen her aunt do so. Being of mixed Black and Latina heritage herself, Lorena loves the idea of being able to follow in her aunt's footsteps.

Lorena understands and promotes the importance of representation in the healthcare field. Because of her mentality alone, she can help other young aspiring students reach for their dreams. Lorena's main passion is based off her desire to help and serve others, aiming her focus to a diverse patient population. She is very motivated to help better the mental and behavioral health outcomes for disadvantaged communities.

Lorena will start her term at the University of Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry during the fall term and continue pursuing her psychiatry career. She knows the work will not be cut out for her and she will face some difficult days, but she is confident that her optimistic attitude, her determination, and her resilience will help her overcome the challenges. As a medical student and a future practicing physician, challenges are inevitable, but her strength will help her become a wonderful physician someday.

For anyone that is interested in the opportunity to participate in the scholarship program, Dr. Kezian will reopen the program this coming November for potential applicants. Each year, Dr. Kezian donates $1,200 to a deserving scholarship applicant to help them with their financial expenses.

The program was first released during the 2016-2017 school year and has been successful each year since then! Dr. Arthur A. Kezian was once a student himself majoring in science and pursuing his dream of becoming a dentist. He knows about the financial stress that can be placed on students and that is why he created the scholarship program, to give back and help students just like him.
