Mabey Provides Interlocking Temporary Roadway for Sunset Avenue Bridge Project
OCEAN TOWNSHIP, NJ (PRWEB) September 25, 2015 -- Bridge construction to replace the 80-year-old Sunset Avenue Bridge has been underway since February 2015 and is scheduled to be completed May 2016. Residents have watched the unique project in its various stages and were impressed by Mabey’s temporary roadway that helped contractors access the bridge site.

Mabey’s roadway allowed contractors to build the bridge and drive piles from the lakebed of Deal Lake that is located between Ocean Township and Asbury Park. General Contractor, Kyle Conti Construction, from Hillsborough, NJ, was working on the demolition of the old Sunset Avenue Bridge and contacted Mabey's shoring specialist, John Butler, to see if Mabey's interlocking matting system could be part of their solution to drive the foundation piles into the lake bed. And Mabey delivered.
Mabey's in-house engineers designed a temporary roadway along the lake bed to make the site safer for crews and equipment with a final design consisting of 430 interlocking mats to create a 300-foot long roadway. The matting system included work pads that branched off the roadway so the contractor could get their crane closer to the piles than originally planned. This matting configuration allowed Kyle Conti to downgrade the need for a 150-ton crane to a 120-ton crane to do the same job, saving money and reducing the crane weight on the lake bed.
The Mabey roadway was comprised of prefabricated composite 8‘x14‘ mats. The mats include a seamless construction and interlocking pin design that creates a continuous, stable roadway and have a non-skid surface pattern that prevents slips and repels static. The mats are flexible to conform to uneven terrain but strong enough to support heavy-duty equipment (like a 120-ton crane). The DuraBase® material will not absorb water and can be easily cleaned to prevent cross-contamination. Mabey's composite mats are preferable to using traditional wood mats that absorb water and contaminants — making them hard to remove (or decontaminate) once exposed to wet conditions.
