Maine Cataract Surgeons Note Increased Need for Cataract & Lens Implant Surgery
Portland, Maine (PRWEB) July 31, 2013 -- Maine cataract surgeons at Eyecare Medical Group commented on the increase in prevalence of cataracts as well as increasing need for cataract surgery and lens implants as the demographic impact of the aging baby boomers is dispersed throughout Maine.
“We see an obvious increase in the prevalence of cataracts that parallels the 19% increase in cataracts reported nationally among those over 40,” Dr. Cassidy noted. “When we find patients with a cataract who complain of difficulties with blurry or cloudy vision, night driving problems or with sunlight glare that begins to interfere with the comfort and safety of their daily activities, then it is time to consider having cataract surgery and lens implants-and we want to encourage them to do so. Whereas with seniors we are concerned about delaying cataract surgery because it can expose them to a greater risk of falls and hip fractures, with baby boomer so many are still working that any decrease in their vision from cataracts that limits in their ability to get back and forth to work and be productive at work is really undesirable. Basically, they need and want good vision now which is consistent with the baby boomer instant gratification mindset,” summarized Dr. Cassidy.
Cataracts are the leading cause of blindness worldwide. About 24 million Americans age 40 and older have cataracts and more than half of all Americans develop cataracts by age 80. A cataract is a clouding of the crystalline lens of the eye preventing light rays from passing through it easily. Symptoms of cataracts may include a clouding or blurring of vision, sensitivity to light and glare, double vision or shadowing in one eye, fading or yellowing of colors and poor night vision, sometimes with haloes around lights.
