MaintenX International is excited to share best practices after attending the SPECS Spring Social Virtual Event.

As we all continue to navigate restrictions and limitations from the Covid-19 pandemic, drawing value from a variety of event formats has become a necessary business skill.

MaintenX International, one of the nation’s largest providers of preventative and reactive facility maintenance, is offering unique insight into connecting with peers and clients during a virtual event. Having attended hundreds of in-person events over the years, MaintenX knows the importance of being able to effectively connect with industry partners and associates.

“While nothing can beat face-to-face meetings for interesting conversation and business insights during a conference, virtual reality is a close second,” said Bill Schaphorst, MaintenX VP of Business Development. “The SPECS Spring Social was a great chance to safely reconnect with the top retailers and suppliers to network, share best practices, and plan for the year ahead.”

As we all continue to navigate restrictions and limitations from the Covid-19 pandemic, drawing value from a variety of event formats has become a necessary business skill. Here are MaintenX’s top tips for successfully navigating online events like a pro.

  • Make Sure You’re Camera Ready: Just because an event is not in-person doesn’t mean that proper attire and professional presentation goes out the window. Good lighting, an eye level camera, and a quiet environment help create the right setting to look – and sound – your best. Soft lighting, like from a nearby window, is best; if you are backlit, other participants may struggle to see your face.
  • Have an Icebreaker: Videoconferencing can be awkward and uncomfortable. Without the physical or environmental cues that occur during in-person interactions, it can be tough to get the rapport and conversation flowing, especially if your event includes smaller breakout sessions. That’s why having an icebreaker, like a joke, fun fact, or interesting question, can help make others on the videocall feel at ease.
  • Wear your Emotions on your… Face: They say the camera adds pounds, but it also dulls your emotional affect. Try to boost your vocal range and facial expressions by about 10 percent. It will make you look more engaged and interested in what your fellow conference-goers have to say.
