The restaurant industry is a demanding one, with stringent regulation, thin margins, and relatively high turnover all presenting challenges. That was all true even before the reduced occupancy and enhanced safety requirements that COVID-19 imposed made the business even harder. One ordinary restaurant decision made harder by the present situation is the choice between remodeling or refreshing an outdated space. MaintenX International, which has provided facility maintenance services to restaurants around the country for 40 years, knows these challenges well, and seeks opportunities to share the benefits of their experience with restaurateurs facing such decisions.
Bill Schaphorst, MaintenX VP of Business Development, contributed an article on that topic to the August/September issue of Facilitator Magazine, the official magazine of the Restaurant Facility Management Association. The issue focuses on best practices in the industry, and Schaphorst outlines the important considerations involved in deciding between refreshing and remodeling, as well as keys to executing the project.
The first thing to consider, as Schaphorst writes, is your situation. If you’re pleased with your space, size, and layout of your restaurant, a refresh is perfect for updating aesthetic features caused by age and customer traffic. If you’re not, a remodel will address technical and workflow issues, allowing a transformation of how you do business.
Another tip: keep ROI top of mind. Whether a less expensive refresh or a capital-intensive remodel, these projects require investment outlay that needs to be recouped. Taking into account big-picture issues like your lease situation and functional requirements, as well as how the updates will fit into and bolster your brand, will ensure you maximize return.
“Publications like Facilitator allow organizations like ours to collaborate for collective benefit,” said Schaphorst. “It was an honor to represent MaintenX and share insights with the RFMA and their members.”
