Carnival, one of Provincetown's biggest events, celebrates its 41st year and there are several other opportunities for visitors and locals to enjoy, such as the Homemade Boat Race during Whale Week and the Provincetown Jazz Festival. PROVINCETOWN, Mass., July 26, 2019 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ -- August in Provincetown is filled with excitement, entertainment, and fun! Carnival, one of Provincetown's biggest events, celebrates its 41st year and there are several other opportunities for visitors and locals to enjoy, such as the Homemade Boat Race during Whale Week and the Provincetown Jazz Festival.
The Homemade Boat Race is hosted by the Center for Coastal Studies and is intended to raise awareness about marine debris in our oceans by having participants build their vessels out of anything that will get them to the finish line. Participants build and race homemade boats in the Provincetown Harbor constructed from materials like plastics, trash, and other materials commonly found on beaches. Come watch or participate starting at 5 p.m. on Thursday, August 1st and check out other fun things to do during the 9th Annual Whale Week: A Celebration of the Sea!
The 14th Annual Provincetown Jazz Festival on August 15th and 19th attracts a talented and diverse pool of jazz musicians. The performances begin at 7:30 each night and include two acts apiece. The first night features Jessica Curran, award-winning composer and well-traveled jazz-pop vocalist who has garnered a following across the United States and in Brazil. She will be followed by Henry Acker, a fifteen-year-old jazz prodigy whose talent far outreaches his years. The second night features Katie Thiroux, a bravura bassist also known for her extensive vocal talents. Internationally renowned jazz pianist with five studio albums and faculty member at Berklee College of Music, Kevin Harris will close out the festival.
Carnival Week is arguably the biggest event of the year, attracting almost 100,000 visitors on the day of the Carnival Parade! Provincetown's community and culture has created its own uniquely popular event, internationally famous for its flair, revelry, expressivity, and vitality. From August 17th - 24th, including pre-carnival events on the 15th and 16th and the parade itself on the 22nd, Provincetown is transformed into a passionate celebration of life, with 2019's theme being Enchanted Forest. The range of events is expansive. There are dog costume parties, sunset cruises, performance art events, gallery receptions, and of course, lots of dance parties.
The Carnival parade, starting at 3 p.m. on the 22nd, is the crowning event for the week. The parade features music, floats, bikes, pull carts, and pedestrians but half the spectacle is the crowd itself. Parade-goers dress up, running with the theme 'Enchanted Forest' and always dutiful to Provincetown's perpetual gay pride celebration. Cheering, singing, and smiles fill the streets along the parade route that runs through the center of Town.
August fades into September with Labor Day weekend, a popular time for visits to Provincetown due to the persistently pleasant weather and ongoing celebration of summer. Slower paced than some summer weekends, Labor Day weekend is filled with parties, shows, and opportunities to check out the galleries. For those looking to enjoy Provincetown without becoming overwhelmed by some of the festivities featured during the summer months, this is the perfect long weekend.
