Marion Dougherty's Memoir to be Released
NEW YORK (PRWEB) February 02, 2015 -- With a [casting career spanning over five decades in the television and film industry, Marion Dougherty is considered as one of Hollywood’s pioneer casting icons. In a posthumous memoir completed by her friend and trusted colleague, Robert Roussel, readers are offered a look into the life and work of an extraordinary woman behind many of the biggest breakthrough artists of the 20th Century. She was awarded the Television Academy’s 2014 Governors Award which was accepted on her behalf by actor Jon Voight and was the primary subject of the HBO documentary ‘Casting By’ which was nominated for an Emmy for Outstanding Arts & Culture Programming. Dougherty passed away on December 4, 2011.
“My Casting Couch Was Too Short” (published by Xlibris) follows Dougherty’s casting profession from 1949 in New York during the Golden Age of Television. Throughout her early career, she cast well over 600 episodes of Kraft Television Theatre, Naked City and Route 66, which led to her successful work in the motion picture industry. Eventually, she became the first female executive at Paramount Pictures in 1975, before securing the position of Vice President of Talent at Warner Brothers in 1979, a position she held up until her retirement in 2000.
An intelligent risk taker who had the most impeccable gut instinct, Dougherty lent her helping hand to some of the greatest actors: James Dean, Al Pacino, Robert De Niro, Paul Newman, Robert Redford, Warren Beatty, Richard Gere, Dustin Hoffman, Mel Gibson, Danny Glover, Bette Midler, Diane Lane, Woody Harrelson, Gene Hackman Glenn Close and Lucy Lui, among countless others. She cast over 125 films alongside premier film directors Stanley Kubrick, Tim Burton, Woody Allen, Clint Eastwood, Jonathan Demme, Richard Brooks, etc.
“My Casting Couch Was Too Short” details her personal journey as a casting executive and those of the directors, producers and actors who made it colorful and remarkable. The memoir shares a brief history of the role that casting plays in the making of television and motion pictures and includes many anecdotes from behind the scenes.
