Sepia Works, a production company, and non-profit, Canady Foundation for the Arts, both based in Washington DC, are making waves in the entertainment industry. Marjuan Canady represents many communities, just like her stories. She is a first-generation Caribbean-American woman from Washington, DC. Marjuan is no stranger to producing as she has been producing internationally both on stage and screen for the last twelve years.
WASHINGTON, Oct.3, 2022 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ -- The future of Diversity and Equity in American Theatre depends on diversifying its producers so it's inclusive to women and people of color. DC producer, writer, and entrepreneur, Marjuan Canady is one producer leading the way. Canady will make her Broadway Co-Producing debut with the American classic, "Death of a Salesman" opening at the Hudson Theatre on October 9th. Canady is no amateur producer, as she was selected as the inaugural 2021-2022 Fellow for the Front Row Productions Fellowship in partnership with Columbia University, led by veteran producers, and two of the only Black Lead Producers on Broadway, Stephen Byrd, and Alia Jones-Harvey. For the last year, Marjuan commuted to New York City weekly, to attend producing courses in the MFA Theatre Management and Producing Program at Columbia University all while juggling life as a new mother. The Fellowship provided an opportunity for Marjuan to study in London, UK as well as funding to produce her own production. Canady is now Lead Producing her musical, Tap In, which is currently in development and features an all-star team of Black and Brown creatives both on and off stage.
Following a critically acclaimed run in London, this vibrant and timely production of Arthur Miller's "Death of a Salesman" comes to Broadway for a strictly limited engagement. Olivier Award nominee Wendell Pierce ("The Wire," "Jack Ryan") and Olivier Award winner and 2022 Tony Award® nominee Sharon D Clarke ("Caroline, or Change"; "Doctor Who") reprise their roles as Willy and Linda Loman in a story told – for the first time on Broadway – from the perspective of an African American family. Directed by Miranda Cromwell – who won an Olivier Award alongside co-director Marianne Elliott for the West End and Young Vic productions – this powerful interpretation of Miller's classic drama illuminates the dark underbelly of the American Dream and its elusive promise of equality and opportunity for all. "I'm so thrilled to make my Broadway producing debut with this production," says Marjuan, "This play is not only a classic in the American Theatre canon, but it also features a truly diverse team on and off the stage. There are so many young producers making their Broadway debut with this production, providing space for early producers to deepen their understanding and participation in the commercial theatre industry. This production highlights what happens when "we" can all meet at the table and make a powerful piece of art."
Marjuan is best known for her one woman, Off-Broadway show and short film, Girls! Girls? Girls, her children's media books and brand, Callaloo Kids, which celebrates Caribbean Diaspora stories for children of color, and her short film The Resort which was shot on location in Trinidad and Tobago, and is now streaming on Issa Rae's Hoorae Media Youtube Channel. Canady's original work has been featured on Sesame Street, at The National Theatre, John F. Kennedy Center, Lincoln Center, and Harlem Stage, to name a few. "I love producing." She says, "I get to bring a project to life by connecting the dots, from script development to hiring the creative and production team, building marketing and business strategies, and finding unique approaches to management. If we want more diversity on stage, we must invest in younger producers, more black and brown women producers."
Marjuan continues to champion her hometown of Washington, DC. She was selected as one of four DC Spotlight Artists by the DC Commission on the Arts and Humanities (DCCAH). On October 27th, Canady will be celebrated at Woolly Mammoth Theatre at the DCAAH Artists' Table, a multimedia event and panel discussion that seeks to answer the question: "What does it take to create and sustain spaces and belonging for historically excluded artists?" The event will debut the Artists' Table, a docuseries that takes viewers into the lives, studios, and artistic passions of a variety of local artists who are transforming the art world with their innovative artworks and unique voices. The panel features artists, activists, educators, and scholars "at the table" to explore the systemic ways to create change for lasting inclusivity, belonging, and access for artists.
