COLLEGE PARK, Md., July 14, 2021 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ -- In celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month, the public is invited to join the M-NCPPC Department of Parks and Recreation's College Park Aviation Museum and Airport in presenting the very first Latinas in Aviation Global Festival, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 2 at the museum, 1985 Corporal Frank Scott Drive, College Park.
At the family-friendly event, guests will meet pilots who are featured in Fig Factor Media's "Latina in Aviation" book as they fly into College Park Airport also known as the Field of Firsts because it has held many "first" events. The pilots will personally share their unique experiences and passion for aviation. Other exciting activities include a ribbon-cutting ceremony, contributor author panels and presentations, "Latinas in Aviation" book signing, mentorship circles, scholarship opportunities, and more.
Jacqueline S. Ruiz, the creator of the "Latinas in Aviation" movement as well as an author of 25 books, an international speaker, and sports pilot, took her affinity for flying and elevating Latinas involved in this industry to new heights with this partnership.
"The inspiration of the brand Latinas in Aviation came to me as a result of my relentless passion for aviation," she said. "As one of the few Latina sports airplane pilots in the US and with all of my experience in publishing books and marketing, I knew that I had to take this mission to elevate more Latinas in this industry. Partnering up with College Park Aviation Museum to bring the first-ever Latinas in Aviation Global Festival with the largest gathering of Latinas in the industry, is truly an honor. From the book to the magazine to the scholarship and now the festival, this mission is growing exponentially and inspiring many people around the world. I will continue to elevate Latinas in all of my endeavors as long as live."
College Park Aviation Museum Director Kevin Cabrera is proud to showcase these Latinas' soaring achievements thanks to Ruiz.
"I am so excited that College Park Aviation Museum will add to the field of firsts legacy at College Park Airport," he said. "It is incredible to think that a group of Latina pilots and professionals will be making history when they fly into the world's oldest operating airport. It is truly an inspiration that these Latinas are breaking barriers in the industry every day. My hope is that these Latinas' stories will inspire our local community to see that there are no limits. As a Latino, I believe that it is extremely important we mentor and support the next generation of leaders. This partnership with Latinas in Aviation is to be at the service of our community."
Museum Public Program Manager Jamie Jones sees this festival attracting participants from different corners of the world and spreading its wings for years to come.
"This event is more than just a one-day program," Jones said. " It's a life-changing moment that will touch the lives of thousands—from the Latinas who are coming from all over the world, to our community members, some who have never visited the Museum, and most importantly to the young girls that can witness someone who looks like them achieve such greatness. It's an honor to be able to be a part of something that highlights the achievement of minorities, especially women, and an event that brings our community together. It's my job, as a museum professional, and as a Black woman to make sure that all voices are being heard and appreciated. I can't wait to see this event grow!"
