MathThematic Opens at Esther Klein Gallery as Part of DesignPhiladelphia Festival
Philadelphia, PA (PRWEB) September 29, 2015 -- MathThematic, a new exhibit combining geometry, fractals, patterns and other mathematical principles with visual art, will open at the University City Science Center’s Esther Klein Gallery (EKG) on October 7, 2015 and run through November 20th. An opening reception will be held at EKG, which is located at 3600 Market Street in Philadelphia, on Wednesday, October 14th from 5:00-7:30 pm. MathThematic is part of the annual city-wide DesignPhiladelphia festival which runs from October 8 – 16.
Two-dimensional paintings and drawings with intricate fractals and kaleidoscopic geometries will be on display alongside a variety of three-dimensional, video and interactive works. Other pieces include long algae-inspired crocheted hyperbolic curves, interactive designs where viewers can customize fractal performance with the touch of a finger, and geometric paper sculptures using the system of scientific kirigami, a type of origami using cut paper.
Curated by Gaby Heit, participating artists include Justin Bean, Regina Ceribelli, William Cromar, Jessica Curtaz, Chris Eben, Robert Fathauer, Karen Freedman, S. Leser, Marco Mahler, Henry Segerman, Gabriele Meyer, Maximilian Morresi, Brittany Phillips, Bruce Pollock, Mike Tanis and Andrew Cameron Zahn.
This is the second EKG exhibition curated by Gaby Heit. The first exhibit was the 2013 Cellular/Molecular show as part of the 2015 Philadelphia Science Festival. Heit is an art and photo director, graphic designer and typophile with a master’s degree from Pratt Institute. With many years of experience in print publishing, she has led the creative direction, rebranding and design for magazines covering fashion, travel, women’s services, business, fine art and design. Also a three-time gallery director and independent curator, Heit has represented several artists from Philadelphia and New York, and has produced several exhibitions that blend fine art and conceptual design. Most recently, she has joined the marketing department of the Philadelphia Film Society. Heit also teaches History of Design at Rutgers University and serves on the Board of AIGA Philadelphia.
