MBI Announces New Resources for Modular Construction; Expands Markets
The Modular Building Institute (MBI) is excited to announce several new resources aimed at helping to educate and inform owners, developers, architects, contractors and code officials. Through its relationship with the National Institute of Building Science's Off Site Construction Council, MBI has worked with other construction related entities including the International Code Council and American Institute of Architects to open new markets for modular construction.
CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va., Feb. 28, 2019 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ -- MBI's Government Affairs Committee took the lead to help develop a new ICC Guideline on the Safe Use of Modified ISO Shipping Containers as Buildings or Building Components. This resource will help code officials as well as the industry understand how best to modify shipping containers while remaining compliant with the building codes.
MBI also worked with the American Institute of Architects (AIA) to develop a design guide for architects using modular construction. This "primer" will share best practices and design considerations as well as highlight the advantages and challenges associated with this process.

"Through MBI's efforts, our industry has not only received much overdue respect, but now we are taking an active role in the development of codes, standards and regulatory policy that have direct benefit to our members."
MBI has also been working directly with agencies to address barriers limiting the use of modular construction for affordable housing and disaster relief, as well as addressing state level regulatory constraints. "There is such an overwhelming need for facilities of all types that modular construction must play a bigger role in filling the gap," said MBI's Government Affairs Director Jon Hannah. "The high demand, coupled with skilled labor shortages are driving more owners to our industry, and the regulations need to keep up with current construction practices."
Many of these resources including the container guideline and architect's primer will be presented as breakout sessions at MBI's upcoming World of Modular Conference March 15-18th at the Cosmopolitan Resort in Las Vegas.
