ABOUT SAINT OSCAR ROMERO – Oscar Romero was a remarkable priest who was canonized as a saint on Oct. 14 in Rome. Romero served as the Archbishop of San Salvador, El Salvador, from 1977 until 1980 amidst political unrest, during which the government launched a "terror campaign" against the country's guerillas in an attempt to crush them. In a homily the day before he was assassinated, Romero called for soldiers to end the violence in his country: "In the name of this suffering people, whose cries rise to heaven each day more tumultuous, I beseech you, I beg you, I order you, in the name of God, stop the repression." The words of Archbishop Romero continue to be relevant today with the social injustices suffered by many refugees and the persecution of the church in other Central American countries, including Nicaragua.
Romero was beatified in San Salvador on May 23, 2015, in a ceremony that drew an estimated 250,000 people, which is believed to be the largest religious gathering ever held in Central America. In a written statement at that Mass, Pope Francis praised Romero as one of "the best children of the church" for the way he supported "the poorest and most marginalized" in society.
