Mediaplanet announces the launch of this year’s “Fighting the Flu” campaign, teaching readers how to properly limit the spread of germs at home, at school, and in the office. Simply put, the best way to protect yourself, colleagues, students, and family from the illness is by constant cleaning and disinfecting before during and after an outbreak.

Every day, and especially during the holidays, the home kitchen is a hotspot for germs and bacteria. Paper towels are the best way to clean up (and throw away) bacteria-filled messes, and to prevent germs from spreading. Kitchen towels and sponges are typically re-used several times before they’re washed, which can spread germs around other kitchen surfaces and increase the odds of cross-contamination. And cleaning sponges and dishtowels is not always foolproof, as bacteria can continue to linger after washing.

With hygiene and cleaning at the forefront of limiting the spread of germs, using paper towels is the preferred method to help keep kitchen surfaces sanitary all through the season. The office is a hotspot for germs and bacteria as well. According to Dr. Gerba, professor of microbiology at the University of Arizona, a recent study from the University of Arizona found that more than half of commonly touched surfaces in an office – like doorknobs, copy machine buttons, the office refrigerator – can become contaminated with a virus when a single person in the office is ill. In order to reduce the amount of flu cases, people should stay home when sick and clean all common surface areas they come in contact with including any shared spaces.

The print component of “Fighting the Flu” is distributed within the December 6th regional circulation of USA Today, with a circulation of approximately 250,000 copies and an estimated readership of 750,000 within the Boston, Carolinas, Chicago, Dallas, Denver, New York, South Florida, and Washington D.C/Baltimore markets. The digital component is distributed nationally, through a vast social media strategy, and across a network of top new sites and partner outlets.
