We are living through the worst epidemic of addiction in American history, and the drugs causing the most deaths are legal prescription opioids.

Helping to educate our nation on the opioid epidemic and increase opioid awareness, Mediaplanet today announces the launch of the sixth edition of their “Opioid Awareness” campaign. This campaign will shed light on opioid use among individuals, families and communities within the U.S., while highlighting resources for those directly affected and their loved ones covering topics ranging from prevention, pain management, treatment and recovery of opioid misuse.

Every day, more than 115 Americans die due to an overdose caused by an opioid addiction. This equates to one person every 12 minutes. In the last 20-plus years, the opioid epidemic in the United States has grown into a crisis as the horrific lasting effects of substance abuse continue to devastate communities across the country today, resulting in more than 600,000 deaths. We are living through the worst epidemic of addiction in American history, and the drugs causing the most deaths are legal prescription opioids.

As awareness for the opioid crisis continues to grow, so do the options for treatment, prevention, alternatives for opioids and education surrounding this ever-timely topic. Additionally, shattering the stigma of addiction is the key to aiding this epidemic. This campaign will feature a conversation focused on destigmatizing the disease and educating readers on the science of the addiction, prevention efforts and stories sharing the knowledge that there is hope and a bright future ahead.

The print component of “Opioid Awareness” is distributed within today’s edition of USA Today in New York, Los Angeles, Washington D.C./Baltimore, Philadelphia, Chicago, Denver, Austin and Nashville markets, with a circulation of approximately 270,000 copies and an estimated readership of 750,000. The digital component is distributed nationally, through a vast social media strategy, and across a network of top news sites and partner outlets. Addiction awareness advocate Sharon Osbourne graces the cover of the print publication. Inside, she opens up about her family’s struggle with opioid use. She also discusses her new role as an advocate for those living with substance-use disorder, as well as their caregivers. “For me there is no stigma,” says Osbourne. “This affects millions of people, not just in this country, but all over the world.” Also, American author David Sheff, who wrote the books Beautiful Boy: A Father's Journey Through His Son's Addiction Clean: Overcoming Addiction and Ending America's Greatest Tragedy, shares the story of his son Nic’s battle with addiction, now the subject of the 2018 film Beautiful Boy. Sheff discusses the importance of family awareness and seeking out quality addiction treatment.
