"I knew if I tackled a vampire story, I didn't want to use traditional vampire lore," Emily Bex posted to her public Facebook page on release week. "I didn't want my characters to have died and returned as vampires, but rather, to be born vampires due to a mutation in their DNA. That way, I could create a multi-generational dynasty that had been passed down through each generation.
Rather than write about them being monsters, I wanted my characters to have very human elements, with the capacity to be good or evil, wrestling with the aspects of their vampire nature. So, while their society could be a violent one, they also have the capacity for love and compassion. The characters would have choices about the paths they chose to follow, struggling to hold on to their human nature, or succumbing to their more violent impulses.
What I ended up with wasn't a book, but six books that covered four generations of a vampire dynasty, fighting to expand their dynasty, battling other covens, all the while struggling to live unnoticed by the mortal community. They take my readers on an emotional journey of tears, anger, grief, laughter, joy, and shouting, "Next book, please!" I have referred to the series as a combination of Twilight for adults meets a modern-day Game of Thrones."
The first book, The Blood Covenant, is on sale for the release of Lorenzo's Rising and has already sold thousands of copies worldwide. The last book in the six-book series is set to be published within the next year. The first five books are currently available through all online retail sites and distributors.
