Memorial Healthcare System's Pediatric Residency Program Earns Accreditation
Hollywood, Fl (PRWEB) June 23, 2016 -- For the second time this year, Memorial Healthcare System (MHS) has been approved to train physicians within its Graduate Medical Education program, this time in pediatrics. The news from the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) means MHS can begin enrolling doctors for residency training that will begin in July 2017. ACGME had previously accredited Memorial’s Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation program.
“This is a huge step forward in our quest to provide the highest-quality education and practical experience to the next generation of pediatricians,” said Dr. Ronald A. Ford, the pediatric program director. “The physicians we’ll attract will also improve patient access and provide the region with more uniquely skilled professionals.”
Florida has traditionally ranked near the bottom nationally in Graduate Medical Education spots per 100,000 residents, which can lead to a shortage of specialists, since physicians often settle in communities where they did their residencies.
Memorial is also pursuing accreditation in Internal Medicine and seeks to add OB/GYN and General Surgery programs in 2019 and Emergency Medicine by 2020.
To accommodate the growth of Graduate Medical Education, MHS is investing $20 million in the expansion of facilities, including new construction of a building on the campus of Memorial
Hospital West in Pembroke Pines. Medical residents will train in a diverse, 12,000-employee, six-hospital healthcare system devoted to delivering patient-centered care with leading-edge research opportunities, enhanced hospital-based amenities to facilitate learning, and access to a high-caliber faculty, many of whom are innovators in their field.
