Mendocino County Cannabis Farmers Offer Support, Shelter During Wildfires
MENDOCINO, Calif. (PRWEB) October 16, 2017 -- A state of emergency has been declared in flame-battered Mendocino County following the outbreak of historically deadly fires in Northern California.
Mendocino County is home to Mendocino Generations, a collective of cannabis farmers, and through that organization, citizens are coming together to help those impacted by the ongoing Redwood Complex Fire.
The fire has burned more than 30,000 acres with five percent containment, and has forced evacuations in Redwood Valley, Potter Valley, Pine Mountain, Cave Creek and the Wente Scout Reservation.
A number of farms in the Mendocino Generations collective have suffered incredible losses due to the fire. Unfortunately, cannabis growers do not qualify for crop insurance or federal emergency relief funds, so it’s imperative that the industry band together to face this latest challenge and move forward.
Farmers in the Mendocino collective are helping each other by offering the use of homes, equipment and extra hands to harvest crops quickly before fires move in. Farmers have also stepped up to provide spaces to dry and cure harvested cannabis after fires destroyed critical buildings. In addition, California Grow Services, a company that offers processing and distribution centers for cultivators, has offered to lend storage space in its facility to Mendocino Generations farmers who are threatened by the fires.
Devastation from the Redwood Complex Fire stretches far beyond cannabis crops. Many families and farmers will deal with the loss of homes, stability, income and beyond. Northern California houses a trove of cultural landmarks and ecological treasures, but we want to make sure Mendocino County and its residents are not forgotten among the ashes.
Chiah Rodriques, co-founder of Mendocino Generations and Paradigm, has begun accepting donations at her shop for fire victims and encourages everyone in the fire’s path to harvest quickly and secure their homesteads and gardens.
“This has been the most financially challenging and stressful year ever for farmers and to add a fire and complete loss on top of it leaves me without words to describe the immense and tragic loss our friends and farmers are experiencing,” said Rodriques.
“We are a strong group bonded by community, history, cannabis and love. Fundraising ideas have begun and many are gathering money and supplies for those who have lost homes or are displaced.”
A GoFundMe page has been created to help the members of Mendo Gen impacted by the Redwood Valley Complex fire at http://www.gofundme.com/mendogenfirefund.
