PLYMOUTH, Mich., June 7, 2021 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ -- In the nine years since her own journey with breast cancer, Metro Detroit resident Flora Migyanka has harnessed her drive to bring awareness and funding to help other women and men battling this devastating disease. Breast Cancer is now the most common cancer worldwide - surpassing lung cancer for the first time in 2020 - and the most common cancer diagnosed in American women. Since 2016, Flora has raised over $1 million for breast cancer research through her yearly event, Uncork for a Cure, and The Dynami Foundation's (δυναμί is Greek word Strength) ancillary events. Uncork for a Cure brings together Detroit-area chefs (many of whom are James Beard-award nominated) along with wine experts, artists, and the community at large at the beautiful and sleek Cauley Ferrari to raise funds for breast cancer. To date, this event and ancillary fundraising efforts have funded six research studies on Invasive Lobular Breast Cancer, an understudied and underserved common subtype of breast cancer, which is now the sixth most diagnosed cancer of women in the U.S.

Last month, Flora was named one of Karmanos Cancer Institute's Heroes of Cancer Award winners, taking home the 2021 Community Service Award for her fundraising efforts and advocacy to date. This annual event celebrates and honors individuals and organizations that have inspired others in the fight against breast cancer.
"Giving back on a local level is the most impactful way to strengthen our communities. By collaborating with physicians and researchers here in Michigan, continued patient advocacy, and outreach, we will further foster our direct impact on research and patient care," says Migyanka.
A spin-off of Uncork and a result of the 2020 pivot is the introduction of Wine & Wellness, a series of corporate virtual tastings where companies of all sizes can customize themes, wines and health topics. These events are hosted by Madeline Triffon, the first American woman – and the second woman in the world – to pass the Master Sommelier exam, with her colleague and friend, Advanced Sommelier Michelle DeHayes. Whether impressing a client or fostering team building, these sommeliers will lead participants through an interactive virtual wine tasting featuring hand-selected bottles, delivered seamlessly to their doorstep, all while funding breast cancer research.
Potential themes include: Au Natural (Caring for Ourselves and our Planet), Discovery (Blind Wine Tasting), Women in Wine (Trailblazing Women Leading the Industry) and Food & Wine Harmony (A Culinary Tour). All tastings will include an optional wellness component presented by a member of the foundation's Medical Advisory Board, some of the world's foremost thought leaders in the field of breast cancer. These experts can kick-off the tasting by discussing breast cancer prevention, genetic risk factors or even ways to lower stress and your risk. The Dynami Foundation coordinates every step from wine selection and coordination, attendee communications, event hosting, and IT.
