Mick Fabar – Pioneering Australian Sustainability, Awarded ISO Accreditation

From a personal perspective, he has achieved astonishing and amazing feats like multiple entries in the Guinness Book of World Records. The professional side is also dedicated to excellence. As an entrepreneur who has carved his name as a pioneer in the construction industry, achieving recognition both within his home country, Australia and Internationally.
Some records in the Guinness Book are amazing or funny, while others are truly eccentric or thought provoking. Mick’s records, however, can only be read with awe. Starting in November 2005, he created a record with 436 punches in a minute, surpassing this soon after with 548. His other achievements of 447 hits on a speedball and 302 left punches (both in under a minute) still stand to this day.
If these give Mick a halo of the surreal, his business deeds only establish the awe.
In 2001 he started Mick Fabar Constructions in his hometown Orange, NSW, quickly making a mark for himself. His meteoric rise was acknowledged with an award for excellence from the Master Builders Association in 2005 for a redevelopment project. However, just when business was on an upswing, the industry changed, and things fell apart. A mining boom in Orange saw builders flocking to this small town to bag construction projects on offer. To maintain higher profits, they offered cut throat rates that compromised quality in return for quantity.
Mick refuses to compromise his standard of excellence. Instead of branching out into an inventive and ground-breaking field he founded Green Homes Australia in 2006, a construction company with a difference. Its entire focus was on creating energy efficient homes that consumed less electricity than conventional houses. The resulting energy bills were significantly reduced, a welcome relief for homeowners in areas of extreme weather seasons.
The measures adopted by Mick Fabar for his unique homes were not very complicated but still pioneering in nature. In the building plans, he incorporated features like an extensive use of solar energy over traditional power sources, passive heating and cooling solutions, recycling applications and rainwater harvesting.
Amongst the general public, there is a perception that sustainable homes are beyond the reach of a typical family.
Mick himself discounts this thought. “This current situation of people thinking that an efficient home is out of their reach could not be further from the truth. In fact, building a highly efficient home (that can save up to 60% on annual bills) need not cost any more than building with any local builder in your area. If the home is designed to suit your climate, block, lifestyle and budget; then this can be easily achieved.”
To spread awareness of this model of energy efficient homes, Mick built two concept houses in 2008 in Orange and invited builders to share his expertise within a franchise model. About 20 builders joined up, and through them, millions of Australians have benefitted from Mick’s pioneering and innovative efforts in this field.
Mick’s efforts led to being awarded prestigious ISO accreditations, the first builder in Australia presented this honour. These included the ISO 9001 for Quality Management Systems, the ISO 14001 for Occupational Health and Safety Management Systems and the ISO 50001 for Energy Management Systems. On top these accreditations, any construction by Green Homes Australia and Mick Fabar Construction, is universally recognised as an energy efficient building.
