By choice or necessity, many are turning to homeschooling. Mike Ognek is a former Marine Officer who knows first-hand how difficult it can be start a homeschooling program because he did it for his three children. "Even before actually starting school, we had to make decision after decision about what materials to use, how to establish and keep a routine for three different grade levels, how to track progress and keep records, and how to facilitate our children exploring their own passions. It was unnecessarily painful, but we didn't know what we didn't know," says Mike.
As schools announced closings, Mike and his wife received many calls from friends and family asking how to homeschool. It quickly became obvious that his experience during their first year was not unique and parents were searching for a comprehensive guide to make decisions that were right for their families. Mike created "The Homeschool Guidebook," a print and electronic book, with the goal of helping parents take the pain out of the process of building their program.

In addition to specific tools and strategies, Mike covers what parents are worried about when considering homeschooling and a lot of benefits they might not know about. "It's important for parents to understand they have commonality with other parents, including those who are already successfully homeschooling. There is enough stress in the process without imposing more on ourselves, so I wanted to help mitigate that for parents by explaining why they shouldn't get wrapped up about the most common worries," Mike added.
